Police destroys Newspapers, Magazines over N5000 monthly bribe in Anambra

Newspapers and Magazines of different media houses worth thousands of naira were for three days destroyed under the Flyover Bridge New Parts Market, Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State by men of the Nigerian Police Station Ogidi following the vendors refusal to continue parting with some money to the police.
The disobedient policemen carried out the operation on Tuesday September 23, Thursday 25 and Friday 26 in spite of a letter to the vendors from the Local Government exempting them from those prohibited from doing their business there, and also in contravention to an order by their Divisional Police Officer DPO incharge of Ogidi Police Station, Mr. H Musa to allow the vendors to do their business.
The vendors were said to have out of pressure to sell their papers, entered into unofficial agreement to pay the police N2,000 weekly for them to be allowed to sell their newspapers and magazines under the flyover Bridge, having been prevented earlier from transacting their business there on the alleged instruct from the Idemili North Council Chairman.
Addressing newsmen Monday, Chairman of Onitsha Newspapers Directors Distributors Association (ONDDA) Mr. Jude Oguzie said “sometime in July this year we got a report from our vendors selling under the bridge that they were being harassed by policemen for selling their papers and magazines under the bridge, and I went with my Vice Chairman and Secretary Mr. Christian Ikpe and Elder Emma Uwakwe to meet with the police.
“The police told us during our meeting that they were under instruction from the Idemili North Council boss not to allow anybody to sell papers under the bridge, when we probed further to know their reason for preventing our vendors, the policemen told us that they can only allow our vendors if we will be paying them N5000 weekly.
“We reminded them that vendors are among the people on essential duties that are not disturbed even during elections, population census, national and state sanitation exercise and even time of curfew but they insisted on being paid, we however, told them that we will present their demands to the media houses to see if it will be approved.
“We did not know that the vendors later entered into agreement with the police to pay them N2000 weekly after initial payment of N5000, but when it became very unbearable to them they decided to stop and the police swooped on them and destroyed their papers” said Oguzie.
Mr. Oguzie said when we got this latest information about the destruction of our papers by the police, we went again to meet them and to our greatest surprise the police men recognized us and ordered the vendors who gathered around to leave the scene for them to discuss with us, and they told us that they cannot allow our vendors unless we pay them the N5000.
Oguzie said the vendors have been paying the police N2000 since June this year and they decided not to pay for last week and the police got angry and resorted to destroying their papers, they did the first day being Tuesday 23 and we went to the Local government to report and we were issued with a letter permitting but the policemen ignored the directive and came the third time being on September 27 to destroy more papers and claimed that their order came from the Area Commander in charge of the place and no more the Local Government.
Oguzie said they are experiencing similar harassment from overzealous local government workers from Onitsha North and South Council Areas and Idemili North and South Council Areas and we wonder if there is any restriction for vendors to sell their papers.
“There is no designated place we are told to sell our papers, we hawk around with our papers, we wonder why we will be harassed this way by people who should know” he said.
Mr Emeka Onwuzuligo who is the Head of Legal Matters in the LGA said that the directive was given in error and he has given a counter directive through a letter that vendors should be exempted from the order not to do business there.
When Vanguard visited the Ogidi police state to get reaction from the DPO, Mr H Musa, he expressed anger against the policemen and promised to withdraw them from the place.

Jonathan places Nigerian flag designer, Pa. Akinkunmi on a ‘life salary’

                                 Taiwo-Akinkunmi
President Goodluck Jonathan has placed  Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, the designer of the Nigerian Flag, on the salary of a Special Assistant forever, according to a tweet by the Special Assistant to the President on New Media, Reno Omokri (@renoomokri).
Taiwo Akinkunmi is a Retired Nigerian civil servant(born 10 May 1936) and famous for designing the Flag of Nigeria, popular called Mr Flag Man.

The national flag is an adaptation of the winning entry from Taiwo Akinkunmi in a competition held in 1959. The original had a red sun with streaming rays placed at the top of the white stripe. This was removed by the judges and the flag has not been altered since.

Taiwo-AkinkunmiThe designer of the national flag was Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, a twenty three-year-old student. He was studying at Norwich Technical College in England when he saw an advertisement in a newspaper that entries were being accepted for the design of a new National flag.
In 1959 Akinkunmi’s design was chosen as the winner and was first officially used

Jonathan keeps 6 planes hovering for 2 hours

                                    President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria
At least six planes full of passengers were made to hover around the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, western Nigeria, on 20 September to allow President Goodluck Jonathan and his advanced team solely use the airspace.
The process, known as VIP movement, ‎lasted for about two hours, starting some minutes to 9:00 a.m. and ending after 11:00 a.m.
‎A VIP movement in Nigeria’s aviation parlance means that the airspace is closed to other commercial or private planes until the VIP has landed and is away from the apron.
During such movements, other planes are made to hover except if there is an emergency.
The risky incident happened while President Jonathan was visiting the Synagogue Church of All Nations where a guesthouse collapsed on 12 September and killed at least 115 people most of them South Africans.
The airspace was first closed some minutes to 9:00 a.m. for the President advanced team. It was opened for some minutes but closed again almost immediately.
A Dana plane scheduled to leave Lagos for Abuja at 9:00 a.m. did not take off until minutes after 11:00 a.m.
The aircraft had to be refuelled to compensate for the two hours lost while the VIP movement lasted.
A Lagos – Abuja flight last only about an hour, and the aircraft is fuel sufficiently enough for that distance.
When the airspace was reopened, our correspondent counted at least ‎six big planes that landed before other parked aircraft were allowed to proceed.
VIP movements are not new in Nigeria and did not ‎start with the administration of Jonathan, but many Nigerians have said the risk for hundreds of passengers in hovering planes outweigh the benefits.
This, they say, is also because many people are not yet convinced that the Nigerian Airspace is safe again.
But a security official who wanted to remain anonymous said with current security challenges in Nigeria, VIPs should be adequately protected.
He said there was nothing wrong in protecting the life of the president, especially as he puts his own life on the line to protect Nigerians.
VIP movement also covers the wife of the president, Patience, other heads of state and some high ranking political office holders.

Illegal train passengers kill journalist in Lagos

                             The scene of the incident
Some illegal train passengers, who were hanging on a moving train at the Ikeja Along bus stop, Lagos have attacked two journalists, causing the death of one of them.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the miscreants had jumped off the train on Tuesday at about 9am and attacked the journalists.
The miscreants were said to have accused the journalists of filming them with the intention of exposing their antics through their medium.
It was learnt that the pressmen had fled for their lives, but the attackers gave them a chase, causing one of the journalists to run into the path of an oncoming commercial bus.
He was said to have died while being taken to a hospital in the area.
When our correspondent visited the area, the victim’s corpse was said to have been deposited at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.
Some officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority at the bus stop also confirmed the death of the pressman, adding that illegal train passengers on moving trains usually mobbed whoever they suspected was filming them.
A LASTMA official, who preferred anonymity, said, “I saw when the two men arrived here. They parked their vehicle inside a compound here and brought out their equipment to do an interview by the highway. They told the security men at the compound that their interview would last 15 to 20 minutes.

“Minutes later, I heard that there was an accident. Some eyewitnesses told us that some illegal train passengers had pursued some men into the path of an oncoming vehicle. When I got there, I realised that it was one of the two pressmen. He had been knocked down by a commercial bus; he was bleeding and unconscious.
“We later learnt that while the two men were having their interview by the roadside, some illegal train passengers had jumped down and accused the pressmen of filming them. They hit the two men with planks and as the duo fled, they chased them. In the process, the two men were pursued into the path of an oncoming bus. One of them was crushed and died before he could get medical attention.”

A seller along the highway, identified simply as Olamide, said, “A woman driving a jeep took the victim to the LASUTH, but he died on the way. Actually, this is not the first time miscreants hanging on train would attack people suspected to be filming them.
“Sometime they even attack LASTMA officials. If your phone is ringing and you dare pick it while the train is passing, they will jump down and attack you.”

11 Year Old Ebola Patient Dances His Way to Recovery

                              ebola-mamadee
11 year old Mamadee is inspiration that no matter what you’re going through, a positive attitude can change your outlook and the outcome of your situation.
Liberian Mamadee was a confirmed Ebola patient who used to dance in the camp, making everyone happy. A few weeks after being admitted, he recovered.
His sister, who was admitted with him, unfortunately passed away.
Here’s the write-up from the YouTube video, posted by international humanitarian org of doctors around the world Doctors Without Borders,

“In the area for Ebola-confirmed patients in the Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Case Management Center in Foya, Liberia, roughly two-thirds of patients don’t survive the Ebola virus. The patients receiving treatment gather on wooden benches and plastic chairs if they have the strength. Other patients can only lie in bed while their immune systems try to fight the deadly virus in their bodies.

Mamadee, 11 years old, is different. As the other patients watch, he performs a dance to Azonto, a type of music that originated in Ghana, on the radio. He jumps, he ducks, he steps to the side, first left, then right, then left, then right, jumps again, turns, swings his hips and shakes his arms. He doesn’t stop, and he doesn’t get tired. It is difficult to believe, but Mamadee is an Ebola-confirmed patient.”

Fans 4Get Back At Davido For His Comment On MC Galaxy's Physical Assault By US Promoter

Fans on Davido IG page get back at him for his comment on MC Galaxy's assault by US Promoter recently at a show in Silver Spring, Maryland, USA.

Music star MC Galaxy was physically assaulted by a music promoter on September 13 at a local club in Silver Spring, Maryland, USA. Rarolae.com got hold of the video footage showing the incident. Unfortunately, this video only shows what happened immediately after MC Galaxy was assaulted by the promoter called T. Spotlite and after police was called to the scene.

Here's what's they said caused the fight. MC Galaxy was billed to perform at a club, but when he got there, he found there were less than 40 people at the venue, because the event was supposedly poorly promoted. After waiting for hours to perform, the Sekem crooner decided to leave, and that was when trouble started. The promoter allegedly grabbed and threw MC Galaxy from his car and punched him several times. He broke his belt, jewelry and shouted obscenities at him until the police arrived to escort MC Galaxy out of the premises. The singer didn't go to his hotel that day because the promoter had allegedly threatened to finish him. This is more MC Galaxy's side of the story, we haven't heard the promoter's side but it's still wrong to do this to an artist.

EFCC hunts bank worker that stole N6.28bn

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission , EFCC, has declared one Mr. Godswill Oyegwa Uyoyou, wanted for alleged theft of the sum of N6.28bn from a new generation bank.

According to EFCC, Oyoyou, an information technology specialist, is being sought for his alleged role in co-ordinating the cyber-theft at a new generation bank where he worked as an IT staff in Abuja.
The EFCC said the suspect helped other conspirators to dress up as maintenance staff in order to get into the bank so that they could use bank’s computers to transfer cash.
However, spokesman for the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren said no members of the gang have been caught, but that many of them are being “tracked”.
Although, details of the robbery are scanty, but it is believed that Uyoyou and other conspirators entered the bank on a Saturday when it was closed and no other staff were working.
The IT worker was key to the robbery, said the EFCC, because of the access he enjoyed to the computer systems at the bank. This was used to siphon N6.28bn into accounts of the conspirators, said EFCC. So far, the bank at the centre of the theft has not been named.

A computer security researcher at Sophos, John Hawes said the amount of cash stolen was “unusually large” but the method the gang chose was “all too common”.

Synagogue Church Building Collapse: 45 Year Old Woman Walks out of Rubble Alive

PIC.18. RESCUE OPERATION AT THE COLLAPSED BUILDING AT SYNAGOGUE CHURCH IN LAGOS
Lagos (NAN) A 45-year-old-woman on Tuesday walked out alive from the rubble of the collapsed building at the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) in Ikotun, Lagos, a rescue worker has said.

The building collapsed on Friday.
Ibrahim Farinloye, the Public Relations Officer of the National Emergency Management Agency, South-West Zone, told journalists in Lagos that the woman walked out on her own at 2 a.m.
Farinloye did not give the identity of the woman.
He said that death toll from the building collapse had increased to 59.
As at Monday, the death toll was 49.
Farinloye said that 131 persons had been rescued alive.
“A woman of about 45 years old walked out of the rubbles on her own around 2 a.m today, while 10 more bodies were recovered, leaving 59 dead and 131 rescued alive,” Farinloye said.
He said that the rescue workers were likely to recover more bodies.
The emergency responders at the scene of the collapsed building on Tuesday deployed three police sniffer dogs to help to locate trapped victims.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police,  Kayode Aderanti, had on Monday approved the use of the sniffer dogs for the rescue operation.
Vehicles conveying the dogs to the scene reportedly broke down on its way.

Farinloye said that the rescue exercise might be concluded on Tuesday.
The police and other security agencies are still on ground to ensure safety of lives and property.

The collapsed six-storey building, said to be a guest house for worshipers at the church, collapsed at about 1 p.m.
The Pastor of the church, Temitope Joshua, attributed the collapse to a ‘mystery’ aircraft, which he said, hovered around the building for about 30 minutes before the collapse.

Footage of Synagogue building colllapse and 'strange airplane' allegedly behind it

This article was written by journalist Ihechukwu Njoku, who reports for The Synogogue Church of All Nations. Looks like the church is blaming the building collapse on a strange airplane. They shared an eerie video purportedly showing a plane flying over the building before it collapsed. Read Njoku's report below and watch the video after the cut...
On Sunday 14th September 2014, Prophet T.B. Joshua played to his congregation and Emmanuel TV viewers worldwide shocking footage captured by security cameras of the horrific moment a guest-house collapsed within the church premises.

Joshua, speaking to a packed auditorium of worshippers seemingly undeterred by the tragic incident that transpired days earlier, began by thanking officials involved in the extensive rescue operation, as well as supporters worldwide for their prayers." Continue..
He then recounted the events that preceded the building collapse at exactly 12:44pm on Friday afternoon. “I know this is not the right time to talk,” the cleric started. “I will just say a little because I don’t want to interfere with the job of security personnel.”

Joshua narrated how on Friday morning at approximately 8am, he left the ‘prayer mountain’  where he ‘lives’ to return to the church, only to be alerted by phone that “there was a jet hovering, moving around at very close range at the mountain which I had just left.”

Shortly afterwards, he was informed the plane in question was flying dangerously low over a particular building within the church premises. “We are going to show you the video,” he then announced.

Church members reacted with gasps of shock and disbelief as a video containing security footage of the ‘strange airplane’ and its multiple flights was shown, followed by the building collapse in less than three seconds of horror.

Joshua went on to state that after thirty years residing in Ikotun, Lagos, he had never witnessed an incident of this nature. “This is to tell you we have a stable terrain in this area. I have been in this community for the past 30 years and no building has collapsed,” he insisted.

He went on to assure congregants that no effort was being spared in rescuing the victims of the tragedy. “As a minister of the Gospel, our first priority is life – life saving,” he stated. “There is no compromise in what we do at all. I am going to leave this for you to judge.”

He then released a warning that another similar incident would occur within the country if proper precautions were not observed. “Let us believe, educate our people and be alert. Why? So that our country will not witness a similar incident in another place.”

Seeming to speak the minds of congregants, Joshua went on, “I know you will ask me – why Synagogue? Don’t forget the spiritual blessing that God has bestowed on us? A big head wears a large hat.”

He proceeded to decry the attitude people had exhibited towards a much-publicised confession of an alleged Boko Haram member in The SCOAN in March 2014. “No matter how long a lie is sustained, truth will someday prevail,” the cleric admonished. “We should remember the militant that came with his group to this church with a bomb. Upon televising it, they said it was a lie – but later discovered it to be true. The case is still with the security.”

He added that the multiple rumours peddled about Ebola victims dying at The SCOAN and the alleged ‘salt-water’ cure ascribed to him that went viral were all attacks against the church. “They were trying to scare you from coming to this church. Don’t be scared – you are not the target, I am the target.”

Joshua stated however that his ‘job’ on earth was still unfinished. “I knew my hour had not yet come. I have not yet finished my job.”

He reminded congregants of a message he had given several weeks earlier that the last few months of 2014, which he had already termed ‘The Year Of Crossing The Bridge’, would contain tragic and calamitous events as if ‘it were 10 years’. He declared that in the midst of the unfortunate incident, “God is on top of the matter”.

Joshua then stated that Divine judgement would befall the perpetrators of the attack. “I want to assure you that our God will get back to them – the agents of satan,” he authoritatively declared.

Joshua went on to shock congregants the more by reading out a message he had received concerning another foiled Boko Haram plot against The SCOAN. “Man of God, my name is Emmanuel,” the message stated. “I have a confession to make. I want to give my life to Jesus Christ. I am a Boko Haram member. I came to SCOAN to plant a bomb but could not do it because of the God who called you. I went back to Jos with the bomb which I still have with me now.”

"The reason I am showing you this is for you to know the God you are serving,” Joshua explained. “God wants to reveal to you what He has been doing that you don’t know about,” he continued, adding that he knows ‘faithless’ attendees may likely stop visiting his church.

Joshua concluded by saluting the ‘martyrs’ who lost their lives in the tragic incident, describing them as people of faith who ‘knew the God they are serving’.

He insisted that truth would prevail amidst the conflicting reports arising concerning the cause of the building’s collapse. “Right from the beginning of my life, people have been lying but they still come back to the truth. That is a good life – for people to lie against you first before they realise the truth. Here I am – I leave it for you to judge. I am a prophet. The security have a job to do.”

Oscar Pistorius will not be found guilty of murder

Oscar Pistorius will not be found guilty of murdering Reeva Steenkamp. At least for now.
The stunning development was revealed as Judge Thokozile Masipa read her summation of the evidence Thursday in front of a packed courthouse in Pretoria, South Africa, and a worldwide television audience.

Masipa has yet to hand down her final decision, which is expected later today. Pistorious could still be found guilty of culpable homicide, a conviction that comes with a maximum of 15 years in prison but carries no mandatory jail sentence. He also faces gun charges that carry potential prison sentences.

But a murder charge is out, for the time being anyway. The prosecution can appeal the decision and, if they do, Pistorius could still be convicted of murder, according to legal experts contacted by Yahoo Sports.
The prosecution, Masipa said in her summation, "failed to show requisite intention to kill the deceased, let alone premeditation."

All along, the prosecution pressed for a conviction for cold-blooded murder. But the Blade Runner has always maintained it was a tragic accident, that he shot his girlfriend in the pre-dawn hours of Valentine's morning last year in a moment of terror, believing that he was protecting them both from an intruder locked behind a bathroom door.

Masipa called Pistorius a "very poor witness," saying he was "evasive" in the face of prosecution questioning. Still, in her opinion that did not warrant a guilty verdict on the charge of premeditated murder, or even dolus eventualis – the grey area between premeditated murder and culpable homicide.
Under dolus eventualis, if Pistorius should have foreseen that his actions could result in death, yet recklessly proceeded anyway, it still would have been considered murder in South African law. That would have come with a minimum sentence of 15 years.

FG To Ban Ponmo

                                     PONMO
Federal Government may have concluded plans to ban sale and widespread consumption of hides and skins(Ponmo)which is a delicacy to most Nigerians.
This indication emerged Tuesday  when the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina called for competent regulations that would check the consumption and sale of the product.
He said this at the 3rd joint anniversary of Animal Science Association of Nigeria (ASAN) and Nigeria Institute of Animal Science held at the University of Ibadan.
If this is achieved, he noted that livestock farmers would stand good chances of making high dollar return if the hides and skins are tanned into leather.
The minister who was represented at the occasion by the Director, Animal Production and Husbandry in the Ministry, Dr. Ademola Raji, said, ”I also commend NIAS for its advocacy and public enlightenment programs on Radio and Television that promote value addition in Livestock, as against sale and consumption of primary products alone, particularly with the issue of curtailing the widespread consumption of hides and skins as Kpomo which ought to be tanned into leather for a very high dollar return to the farmer and Tanneries.

I wish all my artistes were as successful as Wizkid — Banky W

Big Brother: Banky W Proud Of Wizkid’s Successes
Empire Mates Entertainment boss Banky W has said he is proud of his former protege, Wizkid who grew under his EME and expressed profound desire for all his other artistes to be as successful as the Star Boi.
In a recent chat with Channels TV, Banky said he has no grouse with Wizkid for going to form his own record label Star Boi, saying it is indeed his desire for artistes to grow big enough to form their own record labels.
“I signed Wiz and he blew up. Now he is doing ‘Star Boi’ (music label) and that is a good thing. It’s not a bad thing…
The interesting thing is to allow an artist to renegotiate. Wizkid has earned the right to sit at the table to do what he wants to do and I hope all my artistes are as successful as Wizkid.” he said.
Clearing the air on any animosity between him and the Caro crooner, the Samsumg Africa ambassador opined, “”I think that people tend to make things a little more negative than they are.
Every label executive prays for their artistes to grow to the point when they want to set up their own label and they have the ability to do so. It is a natural progression in music.”

Fire guts Big Brother Africa house in S’Africa

The Big Brother Africa house in Johannesburg, South Africa, was today gutted by fire.
According to a statement by M-Net and Endemol, as well as tweets monitored on the Big Brother Africa twitter handle, the “devastating fire” has necessitated a need to postpone the September 7, 2014 launch of the Big Brother Hotshots.
It said, “The cause of the fire, at this stage, is unknown and investigations will commence as soon as it is safe to do so.
“At this stage M-Net and Endemol are urgently looking for an alternative Big Brother house in which to film the production, however as this production has highly technical infrastructure, camera and edit requirements an alternative is not immediately available. Every effort will be made to find a solution as quickly as possible to ensure that Africa’s biggest reality show will continue.”
No life was lost as a result of the fire, and no one was injured. The BBA house is located at the Sasani Studios in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Boko Haram Meets its Waterloo, 59 Terrorists Killed in Bama

The attempt by Boko Haram to expand its Islamic Caliphate in North-east Nigeria by overrunning another major Borno town, Bama, was met with stiff resistance yesterday from the Nigerian military, leading to the death of 59 members of the sect.
The terrorist group, which slightly over a week ago declared a caliphate in Gwoza, attacked Bama, one of the largest towns in the troubled Borno State with a population of over 500,000 and a distance of 78 kilometres away from Maiduguri, yesterday morning, but met its match this time in Nigerian soldiers who faced members of the group squarely in the crossfire that ensued.

According to a security source, 59 out of some 200 insurgents who invaded the town fell to the superior firepower and tactics of the soldiers.
He said over 30 insurgents were also left injured, while some were forced to retreat into the bush and others fled at top speed via the highway.

Some residents of Bama, who spoke to journalists in Maiduguri, said they woke up early to heavy bombardment as gunshot rented the air.
One of the residents said: “Everyone was thrown into pandemonium as we continued to hear deafening gunshots and we were later to hear that over 200 Boko Haram terrorists attempted to capture the town.
“We also learnt that they stormed the town through Bama-Banki-Gwoza Road but they were intercepted by gallant military troops near the Bama Mobile Police Unit located about five kilometres away from the centre of the town.
“They were believed to have tactically attempted to enter Bama town in a convoy of military vehicles and motorcycles, dressed in military uniforms and armed with sophisticated weapons and improvised explosive devices (IEDs).”

He added that during the battle, gunshots were heard and there was the heavy sound of explosions from rocket propelled grenades (RPGs) as well as bombs.
He said the explosions which rented the air forced many residents to flee the town through the bush and some by road to neighbouring villages and towns, including Maiduguri and nearby Konduga.

Another resident of Bama, Mallam Mohammed Bunu Ahmed, told journalists on the phone from the town that “there was an attempt by the insurgents to enter Bama and capture it as they did to Gwoza a few weeks back. But thank God for the good efforts of the troops stationed near the Mobile Police Unit who repelled the attack with the assistance of their colleagues from the 21 Brigade of the Nigerian Army. The troops successfully killed over 59 insurgents and injured over 30 of them”.

He said the whole episode was so frightening that it forced many residents to flee to Maiduguri, adding that some ran to Konduga, while others took refuge in some villages around the town.

A resident of the town, who was able to make it to Maiduguri alongside  others, told journalists at the Konduga motor park, where over 200 persons who fled the town to Maiduguri were temporarily given refuge, said they were waiting for the intervention of the National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA), the state government and other well-meaning members of the society.

Narrating his ordeal, another person who fled to Maiduguri, Alhaji Masa Bukar, said: “We are here because we woke up this morning to the sound of explosions enveloping us. As early as the Subh prayer (4.45 am prayer) we heard gunshots and RPG shots around the Technical College and Mobile Police Unit along Banki Road.
“We were advised by the military and Civilian JTF to leave the town so as to allow them confront the insurgents with minimum collateral damage. This made us flee the town.”

He disclosed that many fleeing residents of the town stopped along the way in Kawuri or Goniri or Konduga, “but we decided to come straightaway to Maiduguri where the military presence is high. We were very afraid”.
He said more people were expected to seek refuge in Maiduguri, adding, “They should be here any moment from now.”

Ahmed equally said as they were heading towards Maiduguri, they saw a convoy of military armoured tanks moving towards Bama.
Also, a traditional title holder in Bama, who did not want his name in print, told journalists that the people of Bama were excited over the new efforts of the military in the area and the relocation of the 21 Armoured Brigade Battalion to Bama, insisting that were it not for the gallantry of the soldiers, Bama would have fallen to the terrorists.
He said: “Even the reinforcement being done by the GOC now is a clear indication that the military is serious and ready to rid the state of the insurgency unlike in the past.”
Some residents of Maiduguri along Bama Road further informed that a convoy of over 25 military vehicles and armoured cars were seen moving rapidly towards Bama town from Maiduguri between 10.30 am and 11.30 am.

Bash Ali disrupts activities at NEXIM Bank

Nigeria’s professional boxer, Bash Ali, and his supporters yesterday barricaded the headquarters of Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM) over the alleged failure of the bank to provide N150 million sponsorship to facilitate the hosting of his world Guinness book of record fight project.

His action paralysed business activities of the bank for almost five hours.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) had in January inaugurated the Local Organising Committee for his proposed Guinness World Book of Records’ title fight.

Former Sports Minister and Chairman of the NSC, Bolaji Abdullahi, had during the inauguration of the 14-man committee, tasked the members on ensuring the successful staging of  the fight within the first quarter of 2014.
But a rather frustrated Ali visited the bank and accused its Managing Director, Mr. Roberts Orya, of trying to scuttle the title fight.
He said since the bank was part of the corporate organisations on the LOC of the project, it ought to have made the fund available for the fight.
But Orya said the bank could not provide N150 million which boxer was requesting, noting that the bank was not set up to provide funding for charity and sporting activities.

He said:”I have been receiving all sorts of abusive text messages from his men. The chap said I am under obligation to give them money. I am not a member of the LOC but a member of staff, Mr.Kadiri Suleiman was mandated to represent the bank.
“It got to a stage last year that Bash Ali stormed here with large crowd saying the federal government has asked his committee to take N150m from NEXIM Bank.

According to him: “Funding of sport is not the mandate of the bank, if a Nigerian engaged in sports and a government agency we want to support, there is a level to which we support under Corporate Social Responsibility.  We don’t have obligation to support Bash Ali.”
Orya said the nomination of the bank as member of LOC was not a directive but a solicitation and l left the institution with a choice to decline giving N150 million.

But according to the boxer:”Orya who was and still remains a member of LOC set up by President Goodluck Jonathan has refused to do what he is supposed to do four months into the inauguration.”
He claimed he doesn’t have the mandate of Mr. President. We have called several meetings where he showed up and some other times he sent a representative. I got here and he said I should show him a copy of mandate from Mr. President.”

Boko Haram attacks Bama in Borno

In what has been described as an expansion drive of the Boko Haram caliphate, it early this morning, launched an attack on Bama, one of the few major towns in Borno State still out of the control of the dreaded Islamist sect.
It was gathered that the insurgents stormed the town in their hundreds, early Monday morning, but were repelled by the military who fought to push them back.
The soldiers attached to the Nigerian Army barracks located in the town were called to task and after engaging the insurgents for over an hour of heavy bombardment, they were able to repel them, according to sources.
A source said the soldiers were successful in driving the insurgents back through the bush.
Though the actual number of casualties could not be ascertained, it was gathered that not less than 20 persons were killed.

It was also gathered that there is a massive exodus of residents from the town, which is about 64km from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital as residents fear the insurgents might return back heavily armed on a retaliatory mission.
