Suspected terrorists arrested by security agents and weapons recovered from them in Wukari, Taraba State...on Wednesday |
The Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Chris Olukolade, said in an electronic mail on Wednesday that some of the terrorists were shot to death during an attack on a military checkpoint at Gindin Dorowa, near Wukari.
He did not give the number of the dead.
He said that the insurgents were dressed in the same manner as the members of the Boko Haram sect operating in the North-East.
Olukolade also said that the military had intensified the search for the abducted students of the Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok.
The Defence spokesman said that one of the insurgents, who was captured, confessed that he had been fighting on the side of the group in Borno State until recently, when he was drafted to fight in the Wukari conflict ‘in furtherance of their mission.’
He said that several arms and ammunition were recovered from the suspected terrorists.
Olukolade said others members of the group, who were sighted during aerial surveillance operation, were trailed to their hideout where they engaged troops in a gun battle.
The spokesman also said that troops arrested some terrorists during a patrol at the Lake Chad islands.
He said that those arrested included a boat operator, who ferries insurgents across the Lake Chad, and a supplier of hard drugs to the insurgents in the area.
According to him, the security agencies had relaxed the curfew in Wukari with the restoration of normalcy to the area.
He stated also that troops were patrolling the area and carrying out a house-to-house search of the area in search of arms.
