34 Weeks Pregnant Montano Runs 800m

Thirty-four weeks pregnant, Alysia Montano ran the 800 meters Thursday in the U.S. track and field championships.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Alysia Montano will have a heck of a story to tell her first child.
Thirty-four weeks pregnant, Montano ran the 800 meters Thursday in the U.S. Track and Field Championships. The five-time national champion finished in 2 minutes, 32.13 seconds - nearly 35 seconds slower than her personal best of 1:57.34 in 2010 in Monaco.

"I've been running throughout my pregnancy and I felt really, really good during the whole process," Montano said after the qualifying heat.
That the 28-year-old former University of California star finished last in her heat didn't matter one bit to the crowd gathered at Hornet Stadium. Trailing the lead pack by more than 120 meters for most of the race, Montano received a rousing ovation as she finished her first lap and the cheering grew louder when she finally crossed the finish line.

"I just didn't want to get lapped and be the first person to get lapped in the 800," said Montano, the 800 national champion the past four years.
She was never close to being lapped, taking a nice relaxed pace from the start and maintaining it throughout.

That was according to the plan Montano laid out after consulting with her physician. Not only did doctors give Montano the OK to run, they encouraged her.
"That took away any fear of what the outside world might think about a woman running during her pregnancy," Montano said. "What I found out mostly was that exercising during pregnancy is actually much better for the mom and the baby. ... I did all the things I normally do ... I just happened to be pregnant. This is my normal this year."

EFCC Still After Fayose

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has described media reports that it had dropped corruption case against the governor-elect of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, as untrue.

The agency’s Head of Media and Publicity, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, told our correspondent on Monday that the recent election of Fayose had not affected the ongoing trial of the governor-elect at the Federal High Court, Ado-Ekiti, for alleged corruption.

Uwujaren said that the case would come up for hearing on July 15, 2014, adding that the immunity clause in the Constitution only applied to the President, the Vice President, sitting governors and their deputies, and not governors- elect.

He said, “The EFCC has not dropped the case against the former Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayodele Fayose.

“The trial is still going on; it is continuing at the Federal High Court, Ado-Ekiti. In fact further hearing comes up on July 15, 2014.

“As you know, immunity from prosecution applies only to the President, the Vice President, sitting governors and their deputies.”
Uwujaren added that the case against Fayose, who is expected to take over as Governor of Ekiti State in October, had made substantial progress as the commission had called two witnesses to testify in the case.

Uwujaren also said that the issue of whether the case against the governor-elect would be withdrawn or not when he takes over as governor was a matter for the court to decide.
“It is the court that would decide whether the case would be discontinued or not; all arguments will be canvassed in court and it is the court that would decide,” he said.

8 Killed As Explosion Rocks Kano Health College

There was pandemonium along the Gida Murtala-BUK Road in Kano   on Monday when an improvised explosive device went off in the School of Hygiene Technology, killing eight people.
About 20 others were critically injured and eight vehicles badly damaged in the incident that was said to have been caused by a suicide bomber.
Most of the victims were freshmen rushing to meet the deadline to register for the new academic session.
It   was learnt that the injured were taken from the scene, which was immediately cordoned off by security operatives, to an undisclosed public health facility in the city.
A teacher however told the   Agence France Presse that the blast originated from a car park, near the   college in the Sabo Kofar area of the city.
The state Commissioner of Police,   Mr Aderenle Shinaba, and the spokesman, Magaji Majiya,   confirmed that eight people died in the explosion.
Shinaba, however, told journalists shortly after visiting the scene that   12 persons were injured in the explosion which occurred at about 2.05 pm.
He said, ‘‘There was an explosion in the school this (Monday) afternoon and it happened right inside the school premises.
‘‘I want to confirm to you that 20 people were moved to the hospital, but eight were confirmed dead and 12 others injured.’’
The commissioner, who linked the blast to suicide bomber, also said one suspect   arrested in connection with the blast was undergoing interrogation at the state police command headquarters.
He said, ‘‘The suspect is in our custody and we will get to know the motive behind the attack and who sent him on this deadly errand.
“Every lead seems to point at suicide bombing. Unlike our previous experience, none of the vehicles parked inside this school caught fire and there is no hole around to suggest a car bombing, but all leads are still open for investigation.”
The Public Relations Officer of the school, Mallam Muhammad, said the mangled bodies of victims were packed in cellophane bags   and taken to a government hospital.
He said, “It was a terrible sight to behold when we came for rescue operation.
“We were conducting the screening of our intakes when a suicide bomber penetrated the orderly queue and blew himself and a number of people up.”
